Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is He, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9, Matthew 21:5-11,Mark 11:6-11, Luke 19:28-31
Today, April 10th, marks the beginning of Holy Week which leads up to Easter on April 17th. Palm Sunday began to be celebrated with the early church in Jerusalem. Celebrations were all day events and at dusk the people would return to the city declaring “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.” Centuries have passed since the early church began, however the celebrations, although different, still continue on today. We celebrate Palm Sunday today in remembrance that Jesus entered Jerusalem as Saviour and King. As Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road, giving Jesus royal treatment. Palm branches represented goodness and victory and were symbolic of the final victory He would soon fulfill over death. The hundreds of people shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven.” When people shouted Hosanna they were declaring Christ as King.
This week marks the beginning of Jesus' journey to the cross. He rode in like a King and was crucified as if He was a criminal. Why didn’t he ride in on a horse? He chose to ride in on a donkey, which directly fulfilled Old Testament prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, Certainly a horse is a more majestic animal suited for a true King. It was our reminder that He came to bring peace and walked in humility. The donkey symbolized peace, so those who chose to ride them showed that they came with peaceful intentions, Jesus reminded us that He is the Prince of Peace! One day very soon our King of Kings and Lord of Lords will return and He will be riding a white horse! Hallelujah.
Today, Palm Sunday. Let's remember at the beginning of this Holy week to open our eyes and welcome Jesus into our hearts. It is a time to let His light shine upon us, and to walk the road alongside Him from His suffering to His resurrection.
We have so much to be grateful for this week. The enemy will try his best to distract us away from the true meaning of what this Holy Week means. Don’t let him win. Let’s choose to focus on praising and worshiping our Lord thanking Him for the gift of HIs sacrifice.
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift. 2 Corinthians 9:15
